The College Application Process

 

The California State University (CSU)

  • 23 campuses, 1 application.
  • Apply online at https://www2.calstate.edu/apply
  • Application filing period is October 1st- November 30th during senior year.
  • Application Fee = $70 per campus. Some students might be able to qualify for 4 application fee waivers
  • All academic information is self-reported.
  • Official transcripts are not accepted with the application.
  • After completing the application, a specific Cal State campus might contact you to provide an official transcript if they have a question.
  • Grade point average and test scores are the only factors in determining admissibility (with the exception of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo).
  • Letters of recommendation and personal statements are not accepted! 
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 required (note: not all eligible students are admitted to impacted campuses).
  • SAT or ACT scores are not being used in the admissions evaluation process for the Class of 2022.
  • Many campuses and/or majors are impacted.

The University of California (UC)

  • 9 campuses, 1 application.
  • Apply online at https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply-now.html
  • Application filing period is October 1st- November 30th during senior year.
  • Application Fee = $70 per campus. Some students might be able to qualify for 4 application fee waivers
  • All academic information is self-reported.
  • Official transcripts are not accepted with the application.
  • After completing the application, a specific UC campus might contact you to provide an official transcript if they have a question.
  • Admission decisions are made with a comprehensive review based on academic criteria and personal achievements.
  • Personal Insight Questions are required.
  • *Letters of recommendation are not accepted unless otherwise requested by a campus.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 required (note: not all eligible students are admitted to impacted campuses).

Private Universities

  • Most applications available in August.
  • Application fees can be up to $90 per campus. Some students might be able to qualify for up to 20 application fee waivers. Or students might receive fee waivers by attending West’s college rep visits.
  • Explore nearly 900 colleges and universities using Common App: www.commonapp.org
  • Application deadlines vary.
  • Applications contain multiple forms and require official transcripts, letters of recommendation and/or secondary school report.
  • Many require Midyear Reports (first semester grades from Senior Year).
  • Many require personal statements and/or essay.
  • SAT and ACT policies vary. Check with each university.

The California Community Colleges

  • 110 campuses with specific transfer programs to the CSU, UC, and private universities.
  • Transfer students receive priority admission consideration to a CSU or UC.
  • High school GPA and SAT/ACT scores are typically not considered when transferring from a community college.
  • Easier access to very competitive universities from community colleges. High school students are held to a much higher standard.
  • Offer an excellent lower division education at a fraction of the cost.
  • Applications available in October.
