West High School

Home of the Warriors

West High School, home of the Warriors, is a destination high school in the South Bay. Located in Torrance, California, West is one of four comprehensive high schools in the Torrance Unified School District.  West has a school enrollment of 1,804 9th-12th grade students, plus 178 8th grade students who attend advanced courses on campus. Our staff is proud to create a collaborative community where all students engage in a caring and rigorous learning environment. Our success, above all else, is our strength in academics partnered with formative student connections and supports to ensure the success of all. West has cultivated a culture of excellence formed in high expectations and collaboration. Keeping at the core of our work is the mission to provide a safe and enriching environment where the whole student is cared for in reaching their highest potential. Outcomes of our commitment to excellence are evidenced in being designated a California Distinguished School in 1984, 1994, 1999, 2005, 2013 and again 2019 along with being recognized as a 2019 California Exemplary Arts Program School, and named a California Gold Ribbon School in 2015. West received the Excellence in Education Award from the United States Department of Education in 1984, followed by the National designation of a Blue Ribbon School in 1984.

Diversity is a hallmark of our West community, with 40% of our student body speaking a language other than English.  The most common languages spoken are Korean, Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic and Urdu.  Approximately 6% of our West High students are English Language Learners, and 25% qualify for free and reduced lunch.

West High is committed to providing all students the opportunity to engage in a meaningful and caring environment; supporting them in developing curiosity, becoming risk-takers and critical thinkers, and ultimately preparing them to exit our doors at graduation to compete and positively contribute in a global society.  A variety of courses are offered to meet this commitment, in addition to offerings that best differentiate learning, from intervention and sheltered classes to offering over 45 Honors and Advanced Placement courses.  It is our goal to prepare all students for graduation and their future. Our graduation rate nears 100% each year, and our A-G rate has grown over 7% in the past year, nearing 70%.

West strives to develop the whole student, assisting them to stretch, reach their full potential and become well-rounded. Extracurricular, enrichment and extension activities on campus include multi-level athletics in all CIF sports, over 60 clubs, a championship robotics team, Career and Technical Education pathways, and visual and performing art programs. Student service organizations such as Key Club, National Honor Society and Interact are active in supporting both our community and our feeder schools’ activities and events.  West High is a proud part of the Torrance community, as evidenced by significant school community involvement and participation, and continuous positive student and school outcomes.
