NHS EARLY COLLEGE PROGRAM

We are excited to announce that North High School has been chosen to begin an Early College Program on our campus for the 2022-2023 school year, as announced in Dr. Stowe’s State of School report released a few weeks ago. The Early College Program will give a cohort of students the opportunity to graduate with both a high school diploma and an AA or AS degree from El Camino College.

Hosted at North High School, our first Early College cohort, consisting of incoming freshmen, will begin their first dual-credit courses next summer. As students enter into their junior year, they will begin to experience and split time between both the North High and El Camino College campuses. While most Early College Programs throughout the state are completely housed at the local community college, North’s program will be unique in that students will still have the opportunity to participate in their high school’s athletics, fine arts, clubs, and other extracurricular activities while earning both diplomas.

Here’s what this means for our campus and students:

Early College will afford 3 different opportunities for our NHS early college cohort students, for the 2022-2023 school year:

  1. Students will be able to graduate from NHS with an Associate's of Arts degree from El Camino College;
  2. Students will be able to graduate from NHS having completed a series of courses to satisfy most of the freshman / sophomore-level general education (GE) requirements before transferring to UC.
  3. Students may opt to take Early College classes, when space is available, to earn college credits before graduating from NHS.
