WHO WE ARE

North High is truly a special place with a rich culture that fosters student and faculty involvement. The North High School learning environment boasts a student-centered curriculum based on state and national content standards and our Schoolwide Learner Outcomes (SLOs). Students participate in powerful learning experiences with classroom instruction supported by practical application driving them to develop into creative, complex thinkers. Parents, students, and staff are all invested in our Saxons’ development into responsible, contributing citizens within the larger community.  The quality of instruction at NHS is excellent, and the school communicates and celebrates positive assessment results and student achievement.

North High has an average enrollment of 1,800 9th-12th grade students with 45% being socioeconomically disadvantaged, and 9% English language learners. North Torrance borders the cities of Redondo Beach, Gardena, Hawthorne, and Lawndale bringing an ethnically diverse student body to our campus. This diversity is a major thread throughout daily life seen in student run culture clubs, the associated student body leadership team, and multicultural days packed with ethnic foods, traditional dancing, games, and celebrations. This vast assortment of culture and ideas is encouraged and celebrated here. It is what most people in the community associate with the embodiment of North High’s identity.  As recently stated by our superintendent, “The culture and atmosphere of embracing diversity on the North High campus is like no other school in the district.”

The staff and educators at North High are a fun group of people who enjoy collaborating academically and interacting socially. One collective trait that we share and value is caring for others and one another. From administrators to their assistants, academic counselors, attendance clerks, campus security, custodians, the site supervisor, librarian, ASB director and teachers, there is a common sense of respect, strong work ethic, support of one another, and lots of shared laughter. Teachers are passionate about their subject matters, caring towards their students, and dedicated to their craft.

Here at North we promote the essence of Saxon Strong, meaning to think and act in ways that are responsible, trustworthy, fair, respectful, caring and with good citizenship. Students are recognized and celebrated each month by staff members when they showcase these virtues. The phrase “Stay Saxon Strong” is thoroughly embedded into classroom discussions, casual conversations, and shout outs.
