Special Education
The Torrance Unified Special Education Department offers a continuum of placements and services to eligible students from ages three to 22. The department offers preschool (ages 3-5) programming on specialized campuses/classrooms and in designated general education/state preschool sites. K-12 services are provided in the settings that address students’ unique needs in the least restrictive environment, utilizing a continuum of services from neighborhood school inclusion to residential placement.
Our adult students, ages 18-22, participate in transition programs that are also individualized. The Special Education Department is manned by a Director, three coordinators and six program specialists; supported by clerical staff. Coordinators and program specialists are assigned to schools regionally and programmatically. In addition to the Special Education Director, TUSD has a Director of Compliance who works closely with the Special Education department to ensure that processes and procedures are compliant with the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, and legally sound.
