Expanded Learning Opportunities Program

Overview

We are pleased to offer our TUSD DevELOPment Academy, an expanded learning enrichment program that provides hands-on engaging learning experiences that focus on developing the positive academic, social, emotional, and physical needs and interests of participating students. "Expanded learning” includes before school, after school, summer, or intersession learning services. Families can have peace of mind, knowing their child is being taken care of in a supportive and safe environment outside of school hours, but still at school.

Goal

To provide academic support, enrichment and connections for students beyond the regular school day. The program complements, but does not replicate, learning activities in the regular school day and school year.

Eligible Students

Starting in 2022, the state of California now provides funding for Expanded Learning Opportunity Programs (ELOP) like ours, for TK through 6th grade students. This program is free for students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals, are experiencing housing instability or are foster youth and enrollment is voluntary. If space is available, students who are English Learners are also able to attend for a fee.

The number of students who might be accepted into our TUSD DevELOPment Academy at each school site is limited and varies according to the staffing available at that site. Schools may choose to prioritize enrollment of students into the program based on academic need.

Program Details

Currently, our TUSD DevELOPment Academy is provided through a partnership with the Torrance YMCA and runs from the close of school until 6:00 p.m. each day. The schedule provides an academic hour that includes time for homework assistance, a nutritious snack, and enrichment activities. Students enrolled in the programs are expected to attend the full program daily. Student pick-up window is between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. daily. Students exiting the program prior to 5:00 p.m. must adhere to the guidelines outlined in the Early Release Policy that can be found in our Parent Handbook.
