South High Athletics
Welcome to South High Athletics!
My name is Kevin Van Waardenburg and I am the Athletic Director at South HS. Athletics are a special part of the high school experience, and I hope our student-athletes, as well as our supporters, enjoy their time here at South High School. Thank you to all of the people both on campus (dedicated coaches, teachers, administration, office and support staff, trainers, and students) and off campus (parents, family, friends, community members, officials, and beyond) that are a part of making these experiences possible.
SHS Athletics is a member of the South Bay Athletic Association (SBAA), a collection of 19 South Bay and surrounding area schools within the CIF-SS (our governing body). The majority of our sports programs are members of the Pioneer League.
Our programs have a rich history, including 248 league titles, 24 CIF-SS Team Championships, and 3 Southern California Regional Championships. Beyond these successes, I am most proud of the valuable lessons, good sportsmanship, and dedication that come with these experiences.
We hope to see you at an SHS Athletic contest soon! Our schedules are posted below. When attending our games, please be supportive and cheer for your teams with respect for the opposing school and its fans.
Here are a few important dates and tips for those of you new to the SHS Athletics Family:
ATHLETIC CLEARANCES
All student-athletes participating in sports (including Marching Band), must complete the Athletic Clearance process detailed on this site below. The whole process, including uploading a current, valid physical exam, must be completed before participation in our programs (this is not needed for the SHS Summer Programs). The window for submitting clearances for the 2024/2025 school year will open in early June. Physicals must be dated after June 10, 2024 so they are valid for the entire school year, so please plan your appointments accordingly. If you are unable to get an appointment with your doctor, there are a number of low-cost options available in our area.
SUPPORTING SHS ATHLETICS
We encourage you to be a part of the SHS Athletics family in many ways. Your donations are a vital part of our success, and we cannot operate without them. Please donate to the Transportation Contribution page during the Athletic Clearance (or cash/check can be brought to the Athletics Office), purchase ASB during registration (this helps pay for officials, awards, tournament costs, and many other expenditures), and to your individual sports Booster Club programs. Thank you in advance for your generosity and support!
