Dear TUSD Families,
I have been involved in education, in Torrance, my entire life. As you may know, I attended Torrance schools. My career has been spent here, dedicated to student growth and learning. Standing right with me, and with you, are the teachers, counselors, classified personnel, and administrators that have given all they have and more through this pandemic to do the absolute best they can for our students.
Last night our seniors graduated, and today we have promotion ceremonies. All of these events mark a transition, moving on to new and greater experiences. But we should also reflect–reflect upon this past year, and all the years we have been in TUSD, because we must learn from history to build a better tomorrow. A few years ago we would have just been thinking about the art projects, the music lessons, reading, math, and AP tests, the learning and student experiences that helped us to know more and grow together. We now have an extra layer of the pandemic and the lives that have been altered, gun violence in society and the lives lost, a country that feels deeply divided, and the mental health challenges facing us as we move forward. We, as an educational community, will continue to deal with all of this head on and ensure that our students are prepared to make a positive impact in the world when they leave our schools.
As an example of triumph over adversity, to our graduating seniors, I have personally seen you step up to the challenges thrust upon you, and I’ve seen you work through those situations with flexibility, poise, and tenacity. Remember to be proud of your achievements, and walk with purpose toward the next chapter of your life. I know you will forge your own path as you pursue your passions and dreams. It is your time to shine! And to all of our other students, I hope you have a summer that gives you space to breathe, laugh, and build friendships. We’ll be here getting TUSD ready for the next year, doing all we can to make it great.
I also want to take a pause to highlight Juneteenth, celebrated this upcoming Monday. Last year, the U.S. Congress designated June 19 as “Juneteenth Independence Day”, a holiday to commemorate the emancipation of all slaves. Black history is a part of American history and as educational leaders we have a responsibility to educate students throughout the entire year about the contributions of African Americans to our great nation. There are many Juneteenth celebrations all across Los Angeles, and I encourage families to learn more about the significance of this holiday.
The message I want to leave you with is that TUSD is a special place, and we are a special community, all dedicated to making our school district great regardless of the circumstances around us. Thank you for trusting us with the education of your students. That trust gives us the courage, and hope, we need to do our work.

Toda mi vida he estado envuelto en la educación en Torrance. Como sabrán, yo fui a la escuela en Torrance. Desempeño mi carrera aquí, dedicado al desarrollo y al aprendizaje de los estudiantes. De pie aquí conmigo y con ustedes, están los maestros, los consejeros, el personal clasificado y los administradores que han dado todo lo que tienen y más durante esta pandemia para hacer todo lo posible por nuestros estudiantes.
Anoche se graduaron nuestros alumnos de la escuela secundaria, y hoy tenemos ceremonias de promoción. Todos estos eventos marcan una transición, pasando a nuevas y mejores experiencias. Pero también debemos reflexionar; Reflexionar sobre el año pasado y sobre todos los años que hemos estado en TUSD, porque debemos aprender de la historia para construir un mañana mejor. Hace unos años, solo hubiéramos estado pensando en los proyectos de arte, en lecciones de música, en la lectura, matemáticas y en los exámenes AP, en aprender y en las experiencias de los estudiantes que nos han ayudado a saber más y crecer juntos. Ahora tenemos una capa adicional por la pandemia y las vidas que han sido alteradas, tenemos la violencia con armas de fuego en la sociedad y las pérdidas de vidas humanas, tenemos un país que se siente profundamente dividido y los desafíos de salud mental que enfrentamos a medida que avanzamos hacia adelante. Nosotros, como comunidad educativa, continuaremos haciéndole frente a esto y nos aseguraremos de que nuestros estudiantes estén preparados para hacer un impacto positivo en el mundo cuando terminen nuestras escuelas.
Para nuestros alumnos que se gradúan de la secundaria, personalmente los he visto enfrentarse a los desafíos que se les presentan, y los he visto trabajar en esas situaciones con flexibilidad, aplomo y tenacidad siendo un ejemplo de triunfo sobre la adversidad. Recuerden estar orgulloso de tus logros y caminen con propósito hacia el próximo capítulo de sus vidas. Sé que se forjarán su propio camino mientras persiguen sus sueños y lo que les apasiona. ¡Es el momento de brillar! Y a todos nuestros otros estudiantes, espero que tengan un verano que les brinde la oportunidad de respirar, de reír y de desarrollar amistades. Nosotros estaremos aquí preparando a TUSD para el próximo año, haciendo todo lo posible para que sea un año excelente.
También quiero hacer una pausa para destacar el día 19 de junio, Juneteenth, que se celebra este próximo lunes. El año pasado, el Congreso de los Estados Unidos designó el día19 de junio como día feriado por el “Día de la Independencia de la Esclavitud” y conmemorar la emancipación de todos los esclavos. La historia del pueblo afroamericano es parte de la historia de los Estados Unidos y, como líderes educativos, tenemos la responsabilidad de educar a los estudiantes durante todo el año sobre las contribuciones de los afroamericanos a nuestra gran nación. Hay muchas celebraciones de Juneteenth por todo Los Ángeles, y animo a las familias a que aprendan más sobre el significado de este día festivo.
El mensaje que quiero dejarles es que TUSD es un lugar especial, y somos una comunidad especial, todos estamos dedicados a hacer que nuestro distrito escolar sea excelente, independientemente de las circunstancias que nos rodean.
