Important Updates

Dear TUSD Families,

The school year is now well underway, and all of our staff are glad to see students engaged in learning, face-to-face as much as possible. I have visited almost all of our sites these past few weeks and the energy and laughter I have seen and heard in our students is truly heart-warming.

I have several updates for you as we continue to adjust to these unusual times.

Student Screening for Symptoms
Starting Wednesday, October 6th, we are discontinuing ‘green screening’ students at the front gates of our K-12 schools each morning. We have yet to see a ‘red screen,’ which we believe is an indication that parents are keeping students home if they are not feeling well or are exhibiting any symptoms related to COVID-19.

It is very important that you continue to screen your student(s) every morning before sending them to school.  These screenings must check for:

  • any symptoms such as current or recent fever (100.4° or higher) or feeling feverish (chills, sweating)
  • cough
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea

Please keep your student(s) home if they are experiencing these symptoms, and also have them tested for COVID-19.

COVID-19 Testing Open for All Students and Staff
We offer free PCR testing at our four main high school sites, for any student or staff, Monday through Friday.  Locations and hours of these sites can be found at: https://www.tusd.org/parents/covid-19-testing-centers

Please note:

  • Please arrive no later than 5:30 pm Monday through Thursday.
  • You must arrive by 5:00 pm on Fridays so that samples can get into the last courier run for the week.
  • This testing is open to any student or staff at no charge, so please use this if there is any indication of symptoms, or even if you’d like baseline testing for your student.
  • If your student has not already registered at TUSD for testing, they MUST bring with them the Consent Form, signed by you, that can be found at: https://www.tusd.org/parents/files/_documents/Parent_-_Adult_Student_Consent_Form.pdf

Cafeteria Food Substitutions Due to Shortages
This year has been a challenge like no other for our Nutrition Services Department. In addition to providing Universal Meal Service, which has increased our service volume by a full 50%, there are major supply chain issues that have led to shortages and substitutions.  The problem is nationwide, and is impacting our suppliers, and thus what we have available to offer.  A Washington Post story on this matter can be found here: https://apple.news/ApMXUDYNTQXaD6SfW4mvRPA

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate these issues and continue to provide nutritious food options to our students.

Staffing Challenges
We are having a difficult time filling many support positions, district-wide, including substitute teachers, Nutrition Services, Maintenance & Operations (for our custodial crews), etc.  Our Human Resources Department and Personnel Commission are working diligently to find qualified people to help support the education of our student(s). Please see attached flyers with more information on available positions and please share with anyone interested in joining the TUSD team.

Governor Newsom Announces COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement for Schools
On Friday, October 1, 2021, Governor Newsom announced plans to add the COVID-19 vaccine to the list of vaccinations required to attend schools in-person when the vaccine receives full approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The requirement will take effect at the start of the school term that follows the full approval of the vaccine for the particular age range (grades 7-12). The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) will consider relevant recommendations from the federal government prior to implementing the requirement. We ask for your patience and will provide parents and the community with more information as it becomes available.

Thank you for your help with a great start to the new school year, and here’s to much more learning ahead.

Sincerely,

Tim Stowe Signature

Estimadas familias,

Atentamente,

Tim Stowe Signature
