AB 2534 & SB 848 Request

These California laws are designed to enhance student safety by requiring rigorous employment-history and misconduct checks during the school hiring process. Under these regulations, applicants for both certificated positions (like teachers) and classified positions (like support staff) must disclose all past educational employers. Prospective schools are then required to contact those former employers to verify employment history and check for any past allegations, investigations, or disciplinary actions involving egregious misconduct.

For SB 848 inquiries, please contact: sb848verification@tusd.org

Retirement Plan Options

CalSTRS

Who it’s for: Certificated staff, including teachers, administrators, counselors, and librarians.

What it is: A defined-benefit pension plan designed specifically for California educators. Rather than relying on Social Security, eligible educators build retirement security through guaranteed lifetime monthly benefits based on their years of service, age, and final compensation

CalPERS

Who it’s for: Classified (non-teaching) staff, such as administrative assistants, custodial and maintenance staff, food service teams, and instructional aides.

What it is: One of the nation's largest defined-benefit public pension plans. Eligible classified employees contribute a portion of their pre-tax income, which, combined with employer contributions, provides a reliable monthly pension when they retire.

APPLE Plan

Who it’s for: Part-time, seasonal, temporary, or substitute employees who are not eligible for CalSTRS or CalPERS.

What it is: An alternative to Social Security designed to help part-time employees save for retirement. Instead of paying into Social Security, a combined 7.5 percent contribution from you and the district goes into a tax-deferred personal savings account. If you leave the district or transfer to a full-time position, the money in your APPLE account is 100 percent yours to take with you or roll over into an IRA.
