Vaping Town Hall at North High School
Torrance, CA – On Wednesday, December 4, 2019, TUSD will be hosting a Vaping Town Hall at North High School from 6 pm to 8 pm. In the past few years, the most prevalent substance abuse trend impacting teens is the increased use of e-cigarettes and vaping. In Los Angeles County, one out of ten high school students reported using e-cigarettes in the past 30 days.
The keynote speaker for the North High town hall will be professional surfer, Alex Gray. While visiting Torrance High School last month, Alex spoke about his family’s loss to addiction. During his keynote address, Alex will discuss how he is working to help combat vape addiction by sharing his powerful message with students and parents in the South Bay.
The event will be moderated by Behavioral Health Services Prevention Coordinator, Jen Harris and include a question and answer panel discussion. The goal of the panel discussion is to give a voice to the different perspectives on this topic. Parents will hear from Torrance Memorial Medical Center emergency room doctor (and Torrance resident), Kurt Hansen; mental health therapist, Rebecca Stephens; North High Dean, Andy McCarty; and a current North High student. Additionally, there will be various vapes on display, as well as resource tables that will provide parents with more information on vaping and other health related topics.
The event will take place in the North High School Performing Arts Center. North High School is located at 3620 W. 182nd Street in Torrance (the Performing Arts Center entrance is on Yukon Street).
