2020-2021 School Year - Opportunities for Input

2020-2021 School Year - Opportunities for Input

Dear TUSD Families,

I hope you and your families are healthy during this time and are finding ways to enjoy summer break. Yesterday marked my first day as Interim Superintendent and as we head into a holiday weekend, I want to share with you that I am honored to be entrusted to serve our community in this new capacity.

Thank you for your unwavering support of TUSD, especially during the physical shutdown of schools this spring. It was a difficult time for all of us, and I know first hand, the important role parents played in continuing to assist and motivate student learning at home. It was a true indication of the amazing school community in Torrance, as we were a model in the South Bay for how a community can come together to support students.

The first day of school is now less than eight weeks away and there is still much to be done before we can welcome our students back to campus. As we continue to plan for the 2020-2021 school year, I would like to thank you for your feedback on the second survey that was sent out last week.

The results told us that a majority of our families, approximately 80%, would prefer the Blended Learning choice and would like to send their student(s) back to school in August, even if it is only part-time. For the 20% of families that would choose to not physically send students to school, we will provide a Distance Learning (fully online) option.

At a Special Meeting of the Board of Education on Monday, June 29, 2020, these options were discussed. An updated presentation of the Reopening Task Force was shared with the Board and community and can be accessed here: TUSD Reopening Task Force Update #2. To watch the Board of Education meeting presentation please click here: June 29, 2020 BOE Meeting

Our Board of Education has provided strong leadership throughout these challenging times and continues to engage with our community in order to make the best decisions for students, staff, and parents. At our July 13 Board meeting, we will be asking our Board to take action on our plan.

Ahead of that meeting, we are continuing to seek further stakeholder engagement, discussion, listening, and input from all of our parents, staff, and community groups. We are hosting a public Board Workshop on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at 3 pm to allow for further discussion and input on the reopening plan. Parents and community members will have an opportunity to speak at this meeting via the Zoom link posted on the District website: https://www.tusd.org/boe/board-meetings

Further, I understand that parents still have many questions regarding what school will look like in late August. While there are still unknowns as we await updated Public Health guidelines, we would like to offer parents the opportunity to have some of their specific questions answered regarding instructional models and student safety. During the month of July, every Thursday starting on July 9, 2020, the District will host informational question and answer Zoom sessions. The meetings will take place from 10-11 am and questions should be submitted to, frye.robin@tusd.org (please email questions by 10 am the day before).
