Message From Dr. Stowe

Torrance Unified Community,

Last week, we held a special Board meeting to recognize the many accomplishments of our Torrance Unified students throughout the year. It was truly inspiring to watch how students across all grade levels already exemplify the elements of our Portrait of a Graduate. From academics to athletics to enrichment, our teams have earned recognition at the local, state, and national levels. This is a testament to the talent, dedication, and engagement of our school community.

This week, I enjoyed attending several graduation events, including our heartfelt “Senior Walks,” a moving tradition when graduating seniors return to their former elementary schools to visit younger students and reconnect with teachers. Watching our seniors share memories, express gratitude, and talk about their futures is a powerful reminder of the fulfilling journey our students take through Torrance Unified.

As we prepare to celebrate the Class of 2025 this evening, I want to extend congratulations to all of our graduates and their families. Like many of you, this moment holds personal meaning for my wife and me as our youngest son receives his diploma tonight. It is a time to reflect, celebrate, and take pride in the accomplishments of all our students as they complete their educational journeys at Torrance Unified.

We also want to reassure families that we remain committed to ensuring a safe and memorable experience for everyone attending our graduations. As always, our ceremonies remain ticket-only events and we appreciate your support in making this a positive and joyful celebration for all.

With gratitude,

Dr. Tim Stowe,
Superintendent of Schools

This exciting, new, fee-based campus is expected to open later this Fall.

Explore The World in Your Own Home
Host an International Student!

Each year, our Torrance Unified International Student Program invites a diverse range of students from as many as 12 different countries to experience a year of education in the United States in our district. During the 2024-2025 school year, 82 international students attended Torrance, North, West, and South High Schools, and 24 completed all the graduation requirements to earn an official diploma. As the program continues to grow, our partner agencies are looking for new host families to make a difference in a young person’s life!

Local families like yours serve an essential role by providing far more than a place to stay. Hosts open their homes to provide a "home away from home," a sense of community, and share family experiences like preparing meals, playing sports, completing homework, celebrating milestones, and helping a student feel supported throughout their high school journey. These small but meaningful moments create lasting memories and cross-cultural connections that benefit both students and the host family.

You are invited to explore the global world in your home, help introduce American culture, build lifelong friendships, and receive a monthly stipend to help you support your student’s stay. If you want to learn more about hosting our district’s international students, please visit tusd.org/schools/international-student.

Portrait of a Graduate Spotlight: Financial Literacy

Have you ever heard someone say, “Schools should be teaching students real-life skills like budgeting, credit, or taxes”? Well, here at Torrance Unified, we agree...and we’ve already started.

Financial Algebra is now offered at all four of our comprehensive high schools for Juniors and Seniors. This higher-level math course teaches practical financial skills such as budgeting, credit management, investing, home ownership, and filing taxes. Students also benefit from guest speakers and free resources thanks to partnerships with organizations like Kinecta and Intuit.

The idea began four years ago when North High teacher Rosita Oey brought a proposal to the District math curriculum committee. She saw the need when half her Algebra 2 students couldn’t calculate a sale price during a class warm-up. “Hearing students say they feel more ready to handle money and life after high school is my favorite part,” said Ms. Oey. “A former student came by and said he got a credit card and paid it off in full—because he learned that in class. That’s a huge win.”

The course quickly grew in popularity and expanded across the District. Today, it is taught by dedicated teachers at North, South, West, and Torrance High Schools. Now, with the State of California set to make financial literacy a graduation requirement by 2027, Torrance Unified is proud to already be leading the way!
