Torrance Unified Community,

Welcome back! August 24 will bring the first day of our 2023-2024 school year and a continued celebration of our 75th year serving students in our Torrance Unified School District. I look forward to welcoming our returning and new students and staff as we anticipate a healthy, safe, and productive school year.

This year, we need your support improving attendance to increase student outcomes and school funding. We receive funding from the state based on daily student attendance, and we know that to achieve academic success, it is essential for students to be present every day. During online registration this year, we asked for your additional commitment in this area because we are very concerned that our students' attendance has not yet returned to pre-COVID levels. Even small adjustments to family schedules, like ensuring that students attend at least some class time rather than missing an entire day, can make a significant difference both in improving student performance and attendance rates across the district. You will continue to hear more about this focus, and I am sincerely optimistic that with your help, we will achieve higher attendance rates this year.

I am very pleased to announce that for the third year in a row, we were voted “Best School District in the South Bay” by the Daily Breeze in the annual Reader's Choice awards. We are passionate about developing every student's full potential and providing the best services for your family. We are very grateful for this honor and your continued trust in Torrance Unified.

Dr. Tim Stowe,
Superintendent of Schools

Back-to-School Safety Reminder!

Recently our partners at the Torrance Police Department issued an official statement reminding us all to be extra careful, slow down, and follow the speed limit as we travel to and from schools with our students.

“Please drive like it is your child, grandchild, niece or nephew walking or riding their bike to school,” Torrance Police Sergeant David Koenig said. “Pick-up and drop-off times can be hectic, but it’s important to be patient and stay safe as children are getting to and from school. It is better to be slow than sorry.”

Most schools have specific instructions and signage that direct families on how to safely pull up to the school and drop off or pick up their students. Please take time to review them and work together with us to keep ALL of our students (and staff!) safe.

New Principals Announcement

We’re proud to welcome our newest principals to Lincoln Elementary School and North High School.

Lincoln Elementary School welcomes Principal Janae Jeffery! A southern California native with Louisiana roots, she has a background in special education and psychology, and served in various assistant principal roles prior to arriving at Torrance Unified. She’d like families to know her sentiment for students– that it’s important to maximize students’ abilities and that educators meet the needs of all learners.

North High School welcomes Principal Paul Nitake! Principal Nitake was born and raised in Torrance, California, a proud alumnus of the Torrance Unified School District K-12 educational community. Formerly an assistant principal at Torrance High School, Principal Nitake says, "I want North High School families to know that I am fully committed to doing whatever it takes to help North High School students thrive... and I look forward to partnering with you to elevate your future!"

We are also excited to congratulate our new middle and high school assistant principals who will step into their new roles on August 24 as well!

Prioritizing Student Mental Health

We continue to be fully committed to the health and wellness of all our students. As a reminder, some of the resources we offer our students include:

  • Full time counselors at every school
  • Additional mental health therapists at secondary schools
  • A new awareness poster that will be displayed on secondary campuses
  • Partnership with Allcove, a free teen space in Redondo Beach
  • Contract with Care Solace to help families find therapists

In addition, to help meet the therapy needs of students, we are pleased to announce a new virtual mental health service available this year! If you’ve been struggling to connect your child with a therapist, or if you’ve noticed changes in your child’s behavior, Hazel Health therapists can help. Through our partnership with Hazel Health, your student(s) can access weekly virtual therapy sessions from home at no cost to you beginning on August 28th. Hazel Health’s licensed therapists can help your child with:

•  Mood/behavior changes, motivation, grief/loss
•  Anxiety, worry, fears
•  Depression, Loneliness
•  Social skills, bullying, sexual identity challenges, peer & family relationships
•  Academic stress

Students Ride the Metro for Free This Year!

Thanks to the support of our Board of Education followed by input from you, we are now partnering with L.A. County Metro to offer the GoPass Program this school year. The GoPass will allow all of our students to ride public transportation for free throughout L.A. County until June 30, 2024. Your school will notify you that the Metro passes may be picked up during registration or in the school office starting the first week of school.

The transportation options include Metro Bus and Rail, Torrance Transit, Gardena Transit, LADOT Dash, Long Beach Transit, Norwalk Transit, etc. Even if your family is already part of the TAP K-12 Reduced Fare program, you will need to pick up a new GoPass TAP card from your school and register it online or via phone to activate it. We look forward to supporting all our families’ transportation needs and keeping you safe with this service. Please click here for more information.

Special Visitors from Taiwanese Educational Group

In early July, we welcomed 17 Taiwanese educational representatives from the Hsinchu City Government Education Department, National Tsing Hua University, and several junior high and elementary schools in Hsinchu City to our summer school program at Anza Elementary School.

The representatives had the opportunity to tour several classrooms and watch a reading lesson, math lesson, science lab, and art enrichment project while students and teachers engaged in their class sessions. They also spoke with our Torrance Unified staff and asked questions about our American educational practices including classroom set-up and decor, testing and data analysis, peer-to-peer group learning, and our enrollment practices.

Our Board of Education President, Dr. Jeremy Gerson, exchanged token gifts of appreciation with the group and presented them with an official certificate to commemorate their visit. The exchange was co-hosted by the City of Torrance and we were grateful to have the mayor in attendance as well.

West High Student Wins Rose Float Design Contest

We are proud to highlight West High School for winning the Torrance Rose Float Association’s conceptual design student contest for the City of Torrance’s rose float! Held annually for the last seven years, the Torrance Rose Float Association (TRFA) opened its Float Design Contest to all high school students within our school district last fall. The rose float contests have seen Torrance Unified representation from 2017 to today, with consecutive rose float contest winners from West High School and Torrance High School. The 2024 parade theme is “Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language,” with our winning design depicting baby birds calling for their mother. The objectives of the TRFA Float Design Contest are to broaden awareness and interest in the City of Torrance Rose Parade Float and engage youth in the parade and our city's float. We encourage you to look for the float in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1, 2024.

Student Artists Get Crafty Over the Summer

We're proud to showcase the incredibly artistic work of our students who participated in the Summer Learning Academy at six of our elementary school sites over the summer. Their artwork resulted in slideshow presentations for Torrance Unified staff to show at our End of The Summer Celebration. Students from Anza, Carr, Torrance, Edison, Walteria, and Wood Elementary schools completed the artwork for the presentations between June and July, depicting images of them crafting animals, coloring flowers and trees, drawing their names, making a wallspread, and creating paper happy faces.

Help Us Reach 100% Participation!

On behalf of our Nutrition Services Department, we are pleased to announce that once again, all of our schools will be offering FREE daily breakfast and lunch during the 2023-2024 School Year thanks to the California Universal Meals Program. Although the meals are free, all families are still highly recommended to submit a meal application as your family may be eligible for additional benefits such as discounted fees. The information will also ensure funding in the areas of academic advisement, counseling, and academic intervention for our students and families with financial burdens.

Please complete a Meal Application Form.

(If your student attends Torrance Elementary School or Shery High School, please complete this form instead: Educational Benefit Form.)

You do not need an account to complete a meal application and you only need to complete one application per household.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please call Nutrition Services at (310) 972-6350 or email nutritionservices@tusd.org.

We are Thankful for Our Supporters!
