Operation Recognition
U.S. Veterans are eligible to receive an honorary TAS High School Diploma!
Torrance Adult School (TAS) and Torrance Unified School District is proud to announce participation in Operation Recognition. TAS under California Code, Education Code – EDC 51430 can now grant a retroactive school diploma to a person who has not received a high school diploma due to their education being interrupted due to their military service. Veterans who would be considered for this honor would need to fall into three categories and would have a formal recommendation and application completed before their being approved and issued a high school diploma through TAS. The three categories for consideration are:
1. The person being recommended was interned by the order of the federal government during World War II and was enrolled in a high school operated by the school district or office of education immediately preceding their internment and di not receive a high school diploma because their education was interrupted due to their interment during World War II.
2. The person is a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, or the Vietnam War; was honorably discharged from their military service in those wars; and did not receive a high school diploma because their education was interrupted due to their military service in those wars.
3. The person has departed California against their will, as defined by Section 48202.4 and at the time of their departure for war was enrolled in grade 12 of a high school operated by the school district or county of education and did not receive a high school diploma because their education was interrupted due to their departure. The person being considered MUST have been in good standing at the time of their departure, and was in good academic standing at the time of their departure. In this instance, TAS will be allowed to consider any coursework that may have been completed by the recommended person outside of the United States or through a virtual online course.
4. Retroactive high school diplomas may also be awarded to any recommended person who is deceased and who meets the stated requirements of numbers 1 and 2 above. In this instance, after being approved, the recommended person's next of kin would be provided with the high school diploma for the person.
