Spartan English Learner Program
The South High English Learner (EL) program works closely with Torrance Unified School District to provide services designed to support our EL students.
The goals of the program are to:
- Help students develop both social and academic English
- Support students as they work toward meeting the state’s grade level content area standards
- Encourage students as they develop cross-cultural proficiency.
Teachers use Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) to convey grade-level content by using specific strategies to make it more comprehensible for English learners.

Ms. Jannie Paredes is an amazing resource for all things EL. She works closely with our EL students to support them, organize their testing, and collaborate with parents to find resources and assistance for their students. She also has access to resources that can help kids, like Chromebooks and translator pens. Be sure to reach out for whatever you need.
EL Programs Offered
- Beginner English Workshop and ELA Classes: The instructor works with students at the beginner level of English acquisition to develop their vocabulary and strengthen their usage of English, while also helping them meet the ELD English Language Arts standards for their English class.
- Intermediate Workshop and Sheltered English: Once students exit the beginner phase, they move to Sheltered ELA classes at grade level. They may be invited to join our Intermediate Workshop, where the focus is on building reading comprehension, writing, and language skills to achieve proficiency.
- EL Intervention: This course is for students who have been in the English Learner program longer and are struggling to find academic success. This course allows students to complete credit recovery during the school day and provides a place for studying and tutorials to promote academic success.
