Dear Edison Families,
As school starts on Thursday, August 24th, I am so excited! I look forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting our new students.
Although we are a closed campus, we will allow parents to walk their child(ren) to class on the first and second day of school (Thursday, 8/24 and Friday, 8/25). This is set up for our new students, especially Kinder or TK kiddos so that they can have a familiar face walking them to class, but all parents are welcome to walk their child to class on these days.
Here’s some Frequently Asked Questions that I hope will ease your mind and help you and your child know what to expect.
How do I know what room & teacher’s name my child is assigned to?
A: You can go to Powerschool (PLEASE REMEMBER TO REGISTER BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS) and your child’s teacher and room # is viewable if you click on “My Schedule” or “Attendance”. The classroom assignments will also be posted on the fence in front of our school on Wednesday, 8/23 after 4 pm. They will be sorted last name alpha order by grade-level and by teacher.
Could the teacher/room assignment change?
A: Yes. The first 5-days of school are important in determining if we are gaining or losing a teacher based on enrollment as well as leveling the classes because the maximum number of students assigned to a class after 5-days is no more than 27 students. Some years we need to create combination classes or dismantle combination classes hence, there is typically some movement of students. We will do our best to minimize any changes but many times it is necessary.
What do I need to do on Powerschool?
A: Every family must register annually on Powerschool. Complete the PowerSchool ONLINE registration which includes Annual Notification of Rights/Responsibilities, Safe School Letter, Acceptable Use and Copyright Policy, Health History Form, and other agreements. Go to https://ps.tusd.org/ to complete online registration
New Students: Families of new students will need to create a new account. You should have received the set-up Access ID and Password for each student in an email from District. If you do not have this information, please contact our main office at 310-533-4513. Steps to set up your account are on the district website here: https://www.tusd.org/parents/powerschool
Returning Students: If you are having difficulty login in and/or linking a student to your account, you may call our main office at 310-533-4513. You can reset your password on your own, and/or enter a ticket for parent technical support here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSetL4EP8mBsFrQZpPJoxA6RFQjDqshww5x1qta6l88lnEnPQQ/viewform
Where do I go on the first day of school?
A: As we are allowing parents on campus, and you can walk your child to their classroom and you can wait until the 8:50 bell to say, "See you Later!" At that time, all parents must exit the campus, or if you are a new family to Edison, go straight to the cafeteria for an orientation, which will begin at 9:00 am.
Can parents/adults go to the playground?
A: Only students (not parents) are allowed on the playground from 8:35 AM. This applies to all days including the first two days and any walk your child to class days, which is hosted on the last Monday of each month.
Where can I drop off my child in the morning?
A: You may drop off your child at either the 1) front gate, 2) valet drop off or 3) the back gate on 184th Place
What time can I drop off my child in the morning?
A: School starts at 8:50, however if the student is eating breakfast, arrive between 8:20-8:45. Students eating breakfast need to report straight to the cafeteria with their backpacks, and not go to the classroom/hallways to drop off their backpack. If the student is going to the playground, the earliest supervision/arrival time is 8:35.

Where do I pick up my child afterschool?
A: All teachers walk their students to the front gate. Students wait until they see the pick up person and go out of the gate once they see you. 1st-5th grade students can also walk themself to the back gate. We do have a staff member at the back gate from 3:03. Other students that are enrolled in the YMCA will walk to the Y building (minus TK/K’s, they pick the younger students up). Students enrolled in the City Parks/Rec program shall walk to the cafeteria, and the ELOP students will walk to their assigned class. Classroom teachers will be informed about which students are going to the Y, ELOP, or Parks/Rec and will help make sure they get to their destination on the first two days.
Will there be a NEW parent orientation?
A: I will be hosting a NEW parent orientation to families who are new to Edison. This will be hosted in our school cafeteria on the first day of school at 9:00 AM and it should be about 45 mins long. TK and Kinder parents do not need to attend as I already hosted a Kindergarten specific Parent Orientation (via Zoom), and recorded it. If you did not receive a copy, please email our school secretary, santos.sandra@tusd.org, or you may attend the in person orientation on the first day of school.
Are students required to wear masks?
A: No, masks are not required, however they are optional. We will have masks available at the front gate for students to take daily if they want/need.
What do I need to bring on the first day?
A: Backpack, water bottle, and snack. School supplies required for the class will be provided by the school. TK and K should bring a change of clothes.
My child loses items often. What can I do?
A: Please label all jackets, water bottles, and lunch boxes. We literally have 2-3 racks of clothes after the first month of school. If you label your child’s belongings, it makes it easier for us to directly return it to your child.
Must I test my child with the COVID Rapid Test Kit?
A: No, however if you should need a rapid test, please contact Atkins.LaJoy@tusd.org
What if I am not happy with my child’s class assignment?
A: There will be no changes to class assignments during the first 5-days of school. If you have any issues, you can ask the office for a “request for transfer” form. Please note, that I do not take teacher requests, however if you have a valid reason why you are requesting a move, I can review this after the 5th day of school.
I hope this helps answer your questions. If not, please refer to our website, or call the school at 310-533-4513. Looking forward to see you on Thursday, August 24, 2023!
Best regards,
Principal Okazaki
