Events
Families are invited to join our district-wide and school-specific events each school year. These included competitions, celebrations, and PTA family fundraisers.
District-wide Events:
(Participation in these activities may vary by school)
Held each May, Wellness Week is a districtwide, week-long event that focuses on promoting mental health and wellness for students and families. Themed days are promoted on social media; there are online activities, and the week usually culminates with a districtwide Family Fitness Fun Day.
Held each Spring, starting in February, students are invited to put on their thinking caps and become real inventors. Students are asked to think of a problem in their lives - or that of their family/friends, that needs solving, and then design a solution to this problem. Students will create and test various solutions, keep an inventor’s log of the process, and then present a prototype. Students are invited to compete at the local, regional, national, and potentially international competitions through Spring and Summer.
Torrance Unified offers both school and a district bike rodeo. School winners are invited to progress to an annual district-wide Bike Rodeo sponsored by the Torrance Firefighter’s Association in partnership with the Torrance Council of PTAs. The event is held each year in May and challenges student finalists in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades with six skills tests and a written test to demonstrate their safe bike-riding techniques to prepare them for riding to and from school.
For the past several years (except for a break during COVID-19) we have invited students to participate in a CombatBot battle usually held in May and sponsored by Torrance Education Foundation. Students in grades Kindergarten through 12th are invited to form teams and create a remote-controlled battle bot (robot) designed to pop one of two small balloons affixed to the opponent’s robot. The teams square off in heated one-on-one battles toward a bracket-style championship until a winner is declared.
