PTA Sponsored Activities

The following is a list of the PTA sponsored events and programs at Fern Elementary.  We welcome you to join us and hope you will consider offering your time and talents to help our students and our school. If you would like to chair any of these events or just help out, please contact the Fern PTA today!

Adventures in Art

Adventures in Art is a PTA art education program designed to provide children with the opportunity, materials, and methods to create their own unique art projects. At Fern, the program is provided for TK-5th grade students.  Parent volunteers attend an orientation and 5 workshops throughout the year. They are trained to share each of 5 projects in the classroom, giving students the opportunity to try different mediums of art. Please don’t miss the annual spring art show held in conjunction with Open House. Contact the Adventures in Art Chairperson if you would like to nurture our budding artists as a docent or assistant.

Community & Appreciation Events

Various Appreciation Days/Weeks are recognized with a variety of activities.  Included are Heroes Week (Police, Fire, & Military Personnel), Red Ribbon Week (Drug Free), Teacher Appreciation Week, Principal Appreciation Week, Administrative Professional Day, and Health Assistant Appreciation Day.

Bike Rodeo

The annual Bike Rodeo event at Fern emphasizes safe riding and safe equipment.  Students in grades 3-5 compete on an obstacle course designed to test their skills (with parent permission).  PTA parents volunteer and staff this event, please contact the Bike Rodeo Chair if you are interested in helping.  Helmets must be worn.

Book Fairs

Each fall and spring, Fern students are encouraged to enjoy the pleasures of reading by purchasing books at our Book Fairs.  The proceeds go directly to the Fern PTA.  This is an ideal way to support the school, stock up on gifts for teachers and students, and to get great bargains.  Please contact our Book Fair Chair if you are interested in helping.

Emergency Preparedness & Safety

Fern PTA annually supplements the emergency supplies provided by Torrance Unified School District.  The PTA helps to stock classrooms with needed supplies such as portable toilets, emergency blankets, water, and additional first aid supplies.  The PTA also sells individual disaster kits as a service to families each fall.

Fun Run

The Fun Run is an invigorating fundraiser and addresses fitness and motivation.  Students sign up sponsors who pledge money. This annual event takes place at Fern.  Please contact the Fun Run Chairperson if you can help.


The PTA sponsors three major fundraisers each year, in the fall, winter and spring, to generate funds that continue the many PTA services throughout the school year. The PTA also sponsors many silent fundraisers such as Box Tops for Education, Ralphs, Amazon, etc.  

General Jack

After Halloween, the PTA collects candy from Fern families, as well as letters written by the students, and donates them to Operation Gratitude, which then sends the care packages to soldiers.

Harvest Festival & Silent Auction

Our Harvest Festival & Silent Auction is held in fall the week before Thanksgiving.  We have carnival games, prizes, food, ice cream, a DJ and much more. Please contact the Harvest Festival chairs if you would be interested in helping.

Honorary Service Awards

Each February the PTA presents Honorary Service Awards to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary service to our school and community.  Nominations are submitted in December or January

Ice Cream Social

Two to three times per year we have an Ice Cream Social where Fern students and their families can come and make ice cream sundaes. In Spring & Fall we have Ice Cream Socials during the book fair so Fern families can browse the book fair and help support Fern.


The PTA maintains and operates the Fern Library, which is completely volunteer run.  The library is open for students during their regularly scheduled class time.  Without the hard work and dedication of our many volunteers, the library cannot remain open.  Please consider donating some of your time each week to this worthwhile program.  Contact our librarian for volunteer information.

Membership Drive

Fern PTA Membership Drive begins with a campaign week in September, and memberships are accepted throughout the year.  You must be a member of the Fern PTA to have voting privileges at PTA meetings, however you are not required to participate. Just purchasing a membership for yourself and family members and/or friends benefits our school tremendously.  Portions of your $8 dues are sent to each level of PTA: Torrance Council of PTA’s, 33rd District, California State PTA, and the National PTA.  This enables PTA to provide programs and services at all levels.  Please join the Fern PTA today!

Read Across America

This is a National Education Association Program. The goal of this program is to have every child read with a caring adult for 30 minutes.  Activities include having guest readers from the community read in each classroom.


The National PTA Reflections Program is an arts recognition and achievement program for students.  It provides students in grades K-5 with the opportunity to explore their artistic and creative nature in literature, music, photography, and visual arts.  Entrants are judged locally with the possibility of going on to state and national levels.


Fern PTA has scholarships that are offered to Torrance High School students.  To be eligible, you must have attended Fern Elementary.  Have your high school counselor contact the office.  If you would like to volunteer for this committee, please contact the Scholarship Chairperson.

Family Events

Fern PTA holds four family events each year for all the students at Fern. There is a Father/Son Day, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Night and Mother/Daughter Event. These events are put on by the Fern PTA to give each student a special experience to enjoy with their families. These events are solely volunteer driven and could use your help. Email the social chairperson if you are interested.

Student Programs, Assemblies, and Field Trips

Fern PTA endeavors to provide quality enrichment activities for Fern students by budgeting funds for programs, assemblies and field trips.  Assemblies are scheduled by the PTA for the student body during the school day.  Enrichment programs and field trips are also provided as another wonderful opportunity to share a variety of outside resources and experiences with our students.


Each year students receive a yearbook, put together by PTA volunteers.  If you have pictures of any school events that you would like to submit for the yearbook, please contact the yearbook chairperson or drop off pictures in the PTA box in the school office.
