PTA Programs
The following is a list of the PTA sponsored events and programs at Edison Elementary. We welcome you to join us and hope you will consider offering your time and talents to help our students and our school. Please note: Due to Covid-19 mitigation protocols, some of these events are currently postponed, but might proceed in the future based on an evaluation of circumstances as the scheduled date approaches. As we are hopeful that conditions may improve throughout the course of the year, we are recruiting people to coordinate these events in case circumstances allow us to proceed.
Adventures in Art
Adventures in Art is a PTA art education program designed to provide children with the opportunity, materials, and methods to create their own unique art projects. At Edison, the program is provided for K-5th grade students. Parent volunteers attend an orientation and 5 workshops throughout the year. They are trained to share each of 5 projects in the classroom, giving students the opportunity to try different mediums of art. Please don’t miss the annual spring art show held in conjunction with the Family Fun Night Carnival. Community & Appreciation Events
Various Appreciation Days/Weeks are recognized with a variety of activities. Included are Blue Ribbon Week (First Responders and Military Personnel), Red Ribbon Week (Drug Free program), Teacher Appreciation Week, Principal Appreciation Week, Administrative Professional Day, and Health Assistant Appreciation Day.
Bike Rodeo
The annual Bike Rodeo event at Edison emphasizes safe riding and safe equipment. Students in grades 3-5 compete on an obstacle course designed to test their skills (with parent permission). PTA parents volunteer and staff this event, please contact the Bike Rodeo Chair if you are interested in helping. Helmets must be worn.
Book Fairs
Each fall and spring, Edison students are encouraged to enjoy the pleasures of reading by purchasing books at our Book Fairs. The proceeds go directly to the Edison PTA. This is an ideal way to support the school, stock up on gifts for teachers and students, and to get great bargains. Please contact our Book Fair Chair if you are interested in helping.
Canned Food Drive
Edison PTA organizes a Food Drive each November to help local families in need at Thanksgiving. This program strives to teach our students the importance of community awareness and kindness. Please contact the Canned Food Drive Chair for more information.
Emergency Preparedness & Safety
Edison PTA annually supplements the emergency supplies provided by Torrance Unified School District. The PTA helps to stock classrooms with needed supplies such as portable toilets, emergency blankets, water, and additional first aid supplies. The PTA also sells individual disaster kits as a service to families each fall.
Family Fun Night Carnival
Our family fun night carnival is held towards the end of the school year. We have carnival games, prizes, food, vendor booths, a DJ and much more.
Family Literacy Night & Ice Cream Social
Twice a year, in the fall and spring, we have family literacy night. Students and their families are invited to join us in the cafeteria for stories read by teachers and parents. In the fall we serve hot chocolate, and in the spring we serve ice cream.
Family Portrait Event
Once a year the PTA arranges a family portrait event where a photographer comes to the school or an outside location (such as a beach or park) and families can take beautiful portraits. A portion of the proceeds from the portraits go back to the school.
Fundraisers
The PTA sponsors two major fundraisers each year, in the fall and spring, to generate funds that continue the many PTA services throughout the school year. The PTA also sponsors many silent fundraisers such as Box Tops for Education, Ralphs Community Contributions, AmazonSmile, etc. Click on the name of each of these programs for more information.
Each February the PTA presents Honorary Service Awards to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary service to our school and community. Nominations are submitted in December or January.
Jog-a-thon
The Jog-a-thon is an invigorating fundraiser and addresses fitness and motivation. Students sign up sponsors who pledge money. This annual event takes place at Edison. Please contact the Jog-a-thon Chairperson if you can help.
The PTA maintains and operates the Edison Library, which is completely volunteer run. Located in Room 35, the library is open for students during their regularly scheduled class time. Without the hard work and dedication of our many volunteers, the library cannot remain open. Please consider donating some of your time each week to this worthwhile program. Edison PTA Membership Drive begins with a campaign week in September, and memberships are accepted throughout the year. You must be a member of the Edison PTA to have voting privileges at PTA meetings, however you are not required to participate. Just purchasing a membership for yourself and family members and/or friends benefits our school tremendously. Portions of your $10.00 dues are sent to each level of PTA: Torrance Council of PTA’s, 33rd District, California State PTA, and the National PTA. This enables PTA to provide programs and services at all levels. Please join the Edison PTA today!
Multicultural Week
This is a week-long event with activities and performances at morning assembly, culminating in a day-long event for all students in the cafeteria, where various cultures are on display, through poster boards, artifacts and pictures. This is a way for our students to learn about and celebrate the many cultures represented at Edison. Multicultural week culminates with a potluck International Food Fair.
Read Across America
This is a National Education Association Program. The goal of this program is to have every child read with a caring adult for 30 minutes. Activities include having guest readers from the community read in each classroom.
Reflections
The National PTA Reflections Program is an arts recognition and achievement program for students. It provides students in grades K-5 with the opportunity to explore their artistic and creative nature in literature, music, photography, and visual arts. Entrants are judged locally with the possibility of going on to state and national levels.
Scholarships
Edison PTA has scholarships that are offered to North High School students. To be eligible, you must have attended Edison Elementary. Have your high school counselor contact the office. If you would like to volunteer for this committee, please contact the Scholarship Chairperson.
Student Programs, Assemblies, and Field Trips
Edison PTA endeavors to provide quality enrichment activities for Edison students by budgeting funds for programs, assemblies and field trips. Assemblies are scheduled by the PTA for the student body during the school day. Enrichment programs and field trips are also provided as another wonderful opportunity to share a variety of outside resources and experiences with our students.
Volunteer Center
The Edison volunteer center is fully staffed by parent volunteers. This room is equipped with a copier, laminator, paper cutter and other supplies. Parent volunteers perform tasks for teachers such as copying, laminating, cutting out or preparing art projects or other assignments. If you have any time to spare this is a great way to help.
Yearbook
Each year students receive a yearbook, put together by PTA volunteers. If you have pictures of any school events that you would like to submit for the yearbook, please contact the yearbook chairperson or drop off pictures in the PTA box in the school office.
Volunteer Now!
The PTA needs volunteers! Big or small, your efforts will make a difference to Edison students! By volunteering your time and talents you can support all Edison students and enrich our community.
As parents we all support our children with their education. As a PTA, we work collaboratively to support the school through many events and volunteer opportunities. - Finally, if interested in an on-campus volunteer position, click here to fill out the District's online Volunteer Application. This form must be resubmitted every year. You will be notified by the District when your application has been processed and you are cleared to volunteer on-campus.
