Evelyn Carr Elementary School: A Brief History

Our school was named after Evelyn Carr, who played an important role in the creation of the Torrance Unified School District. She was born on March 5, 1915, and moved to Torrance in 1933. Evelyn was a housewife with three young children who helped to organize the Torrance Parents Association. She, along with other key supporters, walked the streets and talked with people and convinced them to break from Los Angeles Unified School District.

The district was formed in 1947, when the vote passed to break away from the Los Angeles Unified School District. Evelyn became a prominent member of the first Board of Education of TUSD. Carr Elementary School opened in 1954 and Evelyn was active at the new school named in her honor. It inspired her to become a teacher, and at the age of 41, she received her degree from CSUDH. She later taught at Arlington elementary for 11 years. The 9.6 acres was purchased in 1952 for the princely sum of $35,000.00 by the newly formed Torrance Unified School District. The school was constructed at a cost of $536,000.00, encompassing 38,685 square feet, with 10 buildings and 23 classrooms. Additions were made in 1996. Originally, the school was designated as a Kindergarten through Eighth Grade school. But in 1978, as enrollment declined, it was designated as a Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. Then in 1980, it was designated as a Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. It reached a peak enrollment of 1,057 students in 1956.
