Walteria Elementary School

Opened in 1925. (1.5 acres sold in 1964 for $130,000). Began at what is now 242nd and Park Streets under Redondo School District; transferred to Los Angeles in 1927. Named for the community it served. Heavily damaged in the 1933 earthquake, the plant was moved to wooden buildings nearby. Graduates attended Narbonne High School before 1947. Became part of Torrance district in 1947. New plant at present location (10.1 acres bought in 1949 for $26,000). Opened in 1951. Additions in 1953, 1958, 1996, 1997. Frame stucco, 343,747 sq. ft., 10 buildings, 31 classrooms. Became K-6 school in 1976; K-5 in 1982. Named California Distinguished School, 1989. Nickname/mascot: Wildcats.
