Opened in 1928. (4.4 acres obtained from the Los Angeles District in 1947). Opened in bungalows, as annex to Torrance Elementary School. Original site in 1926 was on Redondo Boulevard (now Torrance Boulevard), but changed to Fern Avenue in 1928. Became a separate school in 1929, in wooden bungalows. Then on the western edge of the city, serving to the Redondo boundary. Present school built, 1932, for $64,000. Additions in 1945, 1950, 1966, 1959, 1994, 1995, 1997. Masonry construction 35,192 sq.ft., 4 buildings, 24 classrooms. Named for street. Started under Los Angeles School District and transferred to Torrance Unified School District in 1947. Greenwood School (opened in 1951, closed in 1984) was operated jointly with Fern after 1953.

Fern Boundary

Six classrooms leased from the city on the Greenwood site in 1997. Rehabilitated for earthquake safety, 1959; cost: $424,000. Nickname/mascot: Falcons.
