North High School Youth Leadership Graduation

May 10, 2008

Modeled after the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce’s adult Leadership Program, the Youth Leadership Program at North High School provided 24 young adults an opportunity to distinguish themselves as future leaders. The six-month program was split into two phases. In the first phase, students visited different organizations within the city in order to become familiar with the history and government of Torrance, the health and environmental resources, and the corporate environment. The second part of the program required the students to come together and implement a community project that would allow them to contribute to the betterment of the city. The North High students designed and implemented an after-school math-tutoring program for their neighboring Edison Elementary School. Completing this type of leadership program allows these students to better understand their community and in turn educates them on how to stay connected to their community as young adults.
