May 06, 2008

Madrona Middle School eighth grader, Alayna Mitchell is crazy for chemistry. Winning her school’s science fair in April, Alayna went on to compete in the Los Angeles County Science Fair where her project won honorable mention in the chemistry category. Alayna was also recognized with a special award from the National Association of Corrosion Engineers and had the opportunity to showcase her project at their Western States Corrosion Seminar this week. “It is a tremendous honor to be invited and a great feeling that they appreciate all my hard work,” says Alayna of her experience participating in the seminar.

Alayna’s project, Corrosion Explosion observed how the temperature of saline water affects the rate of corrosion. “I have always had an interest in science and these science fair projects allow me to explore different scientific ideas,” comments Alayna.
