TUSD Middle School Students Run for Fun!
On Tuesday, May 6th at 4:30 p.m. the West High School field will host students, grades six to eight for a fun-filled track event. Four years ago, P.E. teacher Melissa Mazzie created a club for students interested in improving their running abilities. Starting with only five of her own students, Melissa’s group of participants has grown to over 100 students from all eight TUSD middle schools. The relay competitions are set up like a high school track meet. Runners compete in various races and the top three winners in each category receive medals of recognition. “Most of the 8th graders in the club have been running for all three years and we have created amazing runners who go on to high school and are some of their best runners,” comments Melissa enthusiastically. The event provides middle school aged students the opportunity to experience a real track competition before actually competing in high school. It’s a valuable learning opportunity for them as athletes.
The track meet is a free event and open to the public. West High School is located at 20401 Victor Street, in Torrance. For more information about this event please contact Tammy Khan at 310-972-6152 or email her at tkhan@tusd.org.
