KidZone Fee-based Preschool and Childcare Programs

Torrance Unified School District proudly presents KidZone Preschool and KidZone Care, our newest fee-based early childhood programs. KidZone programs are completely self-supporting, licensed programs offered to families at a fraction of the cost of most private programs in the South Bay. Our staff is highly qualified, carrying Early Childhood permits and a minimum of 2 years early childhood experience.



KidZone Preschool

KidZone Preschool is a developmentally appropriate program that targets kindergarten readiness. Our program is designed for typicallly developing children and fully includes children with high functioning special needs. We use the Doors to Discovery curriculum published by The Wright Group. Half day preschool sessions are offered 3 hours per day, 5 days per week at the following campuses:

Class Sizes and Staffing

Adams, Arlington and Torrance Children's Center: Our classes are limited to 16 students, including up to 4 students with special needs. Each class is staffed with one teacher, one assistant and one paraeducator. An itinerant special education teacher monitors the progress of fully included special needs students.

LAUNCH Preschool:Our LAUNCH Preschool campus houses four classes with similar staffing ratios: one teacher, one assistant and one paraeducator to 15 students with up to five special needs children. One full time special education teacher monitors the progress of the special needs children in these four classes.

Collaborative Class at LAUNCH:In addition, we offer three sessions of collaborative preschool on the LAUNCH campus. This collaborative class has a capacity of 15 students, with full inclusion of up to 8 children with special needs. Because of the nature of this special project, staffing includes one teacher and one assistant as well as a paraeducator and a special education teacher.

 

Tuition and Fees

Registration Fee: A non-refundable registration fee of $35 per child is charged at the time of enrollment. Families of returning students are charged a non-refundable renewal fee of $20 per child.

Tuition: Tuition for KidZone Preschool is charged on a sliding scale, $146-$428 per month based on gross monthly income and family size. Verification of one month's income is required to determine individual tuition. A 5% adjustment is applied for families enrolling more than one child. This adjustment will be made for the second and each subsequent child enrolled.

Tuition payments are made monthly in advance, with the first month's tuition due at registration. Subsequent payments are then due on the 15th of every month. Families may arrange to make weekly payments with a $2 per week processing fee.

Emergency Kit: In accordance with the TUSD Safety Policy, all students must have an earthquake/disaster preparedness kit at school. A list of supplies for the emergency kit is available through our program office, or a pre-assembled emergency kit may be purchased for $5.


Eligibility

Applications are accepted on an on-going basis. To be eligible for this program designed for typically developing children, children must be 3 years old and fully toilet trained. Preference is given to previously enrolled families, with 4-year-old children placed first.

Children with an IEP must apply to enroll through LAUNCH Preschool. Enrollment is granted for IEP students in our full inclusion classes only if the IEP team determines that placement in the least restrictive environment is conducive to the child's meeting his/her IEP goals. If placement in KidZone is deemed appropriate, parents of IEP children must complete enrollment paperwork for BOTH KidZone and LAUNCH Preschool programs.

KidZone Care

KidZone Care is a full-time childcare program offered on the campus of Arlington Elementary School. Care is provided from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with preschool instruction from 8:15-11:15 a.m. After preschool instruction has ended, children have outdoor playtime, lunch and rest time. Facilitated play is offered in the afternoon until center closing time.

Class Sizes and Staffing

KidZone Care enrollment is capped at 20 children with one teacher and two assistants. Children are separated into small groups for age appropriate seatwork activities and are encouraged to play as a whole group during outdoor and free choice time.

 

Tuition and Fees

Tuition: A flat fee of $565 per month per child is charged for employees of Torrance Unified School District; tuition for all other participants is $675 per month per child. Tuition includes morning and afternoon snacks; familiesmust provide lunch.

Tuition payments are made monthly in advance, with the first month's tuition due at registration. Subsequent payments are then due on the 15th of every month. Families may arrange to make weekly payments with a $2 per week processing fee.

Cot Sheet: A Cot Sheet fee of $12 is charged for children in the Full Day program.

Services are provided for children 2.5 years to kindergarten entry. To be eligible for childcare services, children must be at least 2.5 years of age and fully toilet trained.


Application Instructions for KidZone Preschool and Childcare


In order to begin the enrollment process, you must create an Application Packet. Please gather the following documents:
1) Preliminary Application Form. This form can be found on the TUSD website under "Pre-school". Print and complete this form ENTIRELY, and sign the second page.
2) Child's Birth certificate. If the full record is not available, hospital records, birth record abstracts and passports are also accepted.
3) Child's Immunization Record. All immunizations must be current, including a tuberculosis (Mantoux) skin test administered AFTER your child's first birthday.
4) Income Verification. All adults included in the family size must provide verification of gross monthly income, either with pay stubs or income tax return. NOTE: Families paying the maximum tuition are not required to provide income verification. Please call the program office to calculate your tuition before coming in for your intake appointment.

Once you have assembled your Application Packet, please call the program office during office hours to schedule an Intake Appointment.
