TUSD Fifth Grader Honored by the Association of California School Administrators
Jovany Barba is an extraordinary fifth grader at Hickory Elementary School who was recognized at the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) annual “Every Student Succeeding” ceremony on February 21, 2008. As a visually impaired student, Jovany has attained great academic success as a full inclusion student in the general education classroom. He began as a kindergartener at Hickory and has had to overcome numerous educational and social challenges throughout his young life. Jovany worked twice as hard to learn reading, writing, math, and social studies like his peers, however, he also had to learn Braille instruction, Adaptive P.E., and mobility training. Throughout his years at Hickory, Jovany not only had to cope with the challenges he faced in the classroom but also had to tackle socializing with his classmates. His determination never ceased and he soon emerged as a natural leader, often the central leader in discussions and projects. Jovany has been an inspiration to all his teachers and amazes them with his enthusiasm and charisma everyday. His fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Krzmarzick comments, “Jovany is unlike any person I know. He has a wonderful sense of humor and curious sense of wonder about the world. I feel lucky to be a part of that world.”
