COMMUNITY REMINDER TORRANCE RESIDENTS

SCHOOL CHOICE – 2008/2009 SCHOOL YEAR

February 10, 2008

The Torrance Unified School District will again offer residents of the City of Torrance the opportunity to choose where they would like their children to attend school within the District if space is available. Currently, students are generally required to attend school in the attendance area where their parents reside. There are, however, several circumstances recognized by the Board of Education, which are justifiable for students to attend other schools within the District. These options currently include open enrollment and intradistrict permits for Torrance residents and interdistrict attendance permits, usually for childcare, for non-residents.

We anticipate that most parents will continue at their neighborhood home school, the school serving their children’s attendance area; however, if parents choose to have their children attend an alternate school, these programs provide a means to do so on a space-available basis.

Open Enrollment: In schools where the number of open enrollment applications exceeds space available, a lottery will be held to determine priority for open enrollment, and a waiting list will be established to indicate the order in which students will be approved as openings occur. All applications are treated equally, not on a first-come, first-served basis. Once an application is approved through open enrollment, that school becomes the student’s permanent attendance area through high school, and present priority rights at the student’s neighborhood school no longer apply. Transportation is not provided by the District and is the responsibility of the parent or guardian. Applications will be available February 2008 at any Torrance school office and must be submitted in person to the Child Welfare and Attendance Office during the following dates:

Monday - Friday, February 1-29, 2008 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Monday - Friday, March 3-14, 2008 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Saturday, March 15, 2008 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon

Intradistrict Permits: In schools where the number of intradistrict applications exceeds space available, a lottery will be held to determine priority for intradistrict permits, and a waiting list will be established to indicate the order in which students will be approved as openings occur. All applications are treated equally, not on a first-come, first-served basis. Intradistrict permits are valid for one school year and will be reevaluated at the end of each school year. Students will be granted subsequent intradistrict permits if the student remains in good standing. Transportation is not provided by the District and is the responsibility of the parent or guardian. Parent/Guardian must apply in person at the Child Welfare and Attendance Office on the following dates:

Monday - Friday, March 24-31, 2008 8:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Monday - Friday, April 1-30, 2008 8:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Monday - Friday, May 1-9 8:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Interdistrict (non-resident) Permits: Parent/Guardian must obtain a permit release from their resident school district before applications are considered. Enrollment for interdistrict (non-resident) permits opens on April 28, 2008. Preliminary decisions will be made by June 27, 2008, with final decisions made by August 29, 2008.
