Board Member Mark Steffen Receives Masters In Goverance Certificate

November 14, 2007

Torrance, CA – Mark Steffen, Torrance School Board member, has just completed the California School Board Association’s Masters in Governance program. The Masters in Governance program, established in 1998, equips school district leaders with the necessary knowledge and skills to support an effective governance structure. “This certificate recognizes a demonstrated commitment to learning, leadership and effective governance,” said CSBA President Kathy Kinley. “The Masters in Governance program effectively expands the breadth and the depth of knowledge our members are able to bring back to their school boards and districts.” Since its inception, more than 1,800 board members and superintendents have participated in this highly acclaimed program. In order to obtain certification, candidates complete 60 hours of intensive training on the role of governance, in setting the direction of the district, student learning and achievement, school finance and facilities, human resources, setting policy, collective bargaining, and community leadership.

“I believe that the Master's in Governance program has given me a greater insight into the role of a school board member. The course and discussions have taught me the importance of respecting each individual involved in the education of our students and how best to support them. I feel that I have come away with many skills and a better understanding of my role and my duties as a board member. I hope that I can translate this into better serving the needs of students, staff, and community,” remarks Mr. Steffen when discussing the value of the program. “I feel that the hours spent completing the course were well worth it.”

Currently a fourth grade teacher in the Hawthorne School District, Mr. Steffen has been a dedicated educator for over 17 years. He has also served as Director of the Maintenance Department for the Hawthorne District and has been involved with the teachers association. Having worked as both a teacher and an administrator, Mr. Steffen has knowledge and understanding of the importance of both sides coming together to bring valuable educational experiences to our students.

During the first two years of his term, Mr. Steffen has worked hard to educate the community as to the importance of passing a school bond. He was one of the Board members on the Facilities and Asset Review Committee. This committee worked closely with parents and staff to examine the facility needs of each school site in the Torrance Unified School District. He looks forward to the day when our community schools will be modernized and updated so they can better meet the needs of our students today and in the future.
