CLASS TITLE: EQUIPMENT/CART MECHANIC
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Manager-Transportation or assigned supervisor, maintain, repair and adjust a variety of power-driven and air-cooled equipment including grounds maintenance equipment, electric carts, air compressors, shop equipment and custodial equipment.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Maintain, repair and adjust a variety of power-driven and air-cooled maintenance equipment including grounds maintenance equipment, electric carts, air compressors, shop equipment and custodial equipment; perform major repair of two- and four-cycle low-horsepower engines. E
Maintain, repair and rebuild air-cooled engines, hydrostatic drive trains and seals, hydraulic pump units, carburetors, broken oil lines and o-rings on fittings. E
Perform preventive maintenance and tune-ups to equipment and tools; replace tires, gaskets, rings, belts, bearings, plugs and filters; clean and sharpen mower cutting reels and blades. E
Perform maintenance, repair and adjustments to mechanical and electrical attachments to power equipment; troubleshoot, identify and repair electrical malfunctions of equipment and attachments. E
Requisition parts and supplies and maintain inventory; order new engines or short blocks when engines are beyond economic repair. E
Operate welding equipment to repair broken frames and decks on mowers; weld and repair frames and arms on large mowers; fabricate and machine special parts, shafts and bushings for older equipment. E
Operate a variety of equipment including a drill press, hydraulic press, lathe, gas and ARC welder, grinders, tire changer, test equipment and a variety of power and hand tools. E
Maintain routine records related to equipment maintenance and repair activities; record costs, parts purchased, suppliers used and repairs performed. E
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the repair of maintenance equipment.
Operation, maintenance and repair of electric, gasoline-powered and air-cooled maintenance equipment.
Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
Health and safety regulations.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Proper lifting techniques.
ABILITY TO:
Maintain, repair and adjust a variety of electric, power-driven and air-cooled maintenance equipment.
Operate hand and power tools and other equipment used in grounds maintenance and custodial equipment.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Work cooperatively with others.
Maintain routine records.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years experience in maintenance and repair of electric, power-driven and air-cooled engines and equipment.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license. Employees in this classification must maintain insurability at the District's standard rate during the term of employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Tool room, and automobile, welding and machine shop environment; subject to noise from equipment operation.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Bending, pushing, moving, and lifting objects weighing up to 75 pounds, pushing and pulling, bending, and reaching above the shoulder and overhead.
HAZARDS:
Equipment noise and fumes, and exposure to toxic vapors and gases.
