Terry Ragins

Board Member

Mrs. Terry Ragins

September 12, 2007

Terry Ragins was elected to the Board in November 2003. She graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Therapy, and received a Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After graduate school, she and her physician husband chose to purchase a home and move to Torrance in 1987. They have been proud to be a part of the Torrance community for almost 20 years now, where they raised their two sons. She has been team mom and coach for various sports teams, music groups, and Destination Imagination and Odyssey of the Mind (OM) teams. Both sons attended Torrance public schools until their graduations from North High School in 2005.

Mrs. Ragins served thousands of hours as a volunteer in the Torrance school system at the school level at Yukon Elementary School, Magruder Middle School, and North High School. She has continued her PTA activities at North by chairing an award winning Career Day for the past two years.

On the Board of Directors of the Torrance Council of PTAs Terry has been corresponding secretary for 2 years, and parliamentarian for 4 years along with her school board duties. For the past two years in Torrance Council, she has headed up the district-wide College Fair making very well-received improvements in this worthwhile program. Preparation of TUSD students for college is very important to her. Both of her sons are currently successful college students and sharing their family's journey through college selection and acceptance has been the theme of a number of public presentations to students, parents, and families.

In recognition of her ongoing volunteer efforts for the schools, Terry was honored with an Honorary Service Award from Yukon Elementary School PTA, a Continuing Service Award from Magruder Middle School PTSA, and in 2005, a Continuing Service Award from the Torrance Council of PTAs.

Terry actively pursues advocating for education, with Torrance community leaders, as well as speaking with state lawmakers in home offices and on visits to Sacramento. She sees promotion of improved funding for education as a priority. She currently serves as liaison from the Board of Education to the Board of Directors for the Torrance Education Foundation and is actively involved in the fundraising aspects of this organization that financially supports TUSD. In addition, she is a part of the Community Advisory Panel at ExxonMobil, and has been a member of the Pegasus Award Selection Committee.

For Terry, her husband, Mark, and her two sons, travel and exploration of new cultures remains a priority as they continue to travel the world together during school vacations.
