Personnel Commission

June 04, 2007

LOOKING FOR A CHANGE?

Occasionally, and for q variety of reasons, employees in a classification may desire to relocate to a different worksite within the District. Work location transfer requests are permitted under Personnel Commission Rule 11.1.2 (Voluntary Transfer), which states:

"Transfer requests may be granted at any time, subject to the availability of positions and the qualifications of the applicant. Employees who have requested a transfer shall be given first consideration for a transfer based upon, but not limited to seniority, job performance, qualifications, and the needs of the District."

A list of employees seeking transfer, who have submitted a Transfer Request Form to the Personnel Commission office, will be included together with eligibility lists sent to fill existing vacancies for the classification at the location(s) desired (Commission Rule 11.1.10). Any employee wishing to be considered for transfer should be sure to stop by the Personnel Commission office to complete a Transfer Request Form so it can be placed on file for desired openings should they occur.

GIVE ME A BREAK

Personnel Commission Rules provide specific guidelines for classified employees for insuring that they are entitled to take regular rest breaks and meal periods. Under Commission Rule 10.1.6, "all employees who are scheduled to work over five (5) consecutive hours per day shall be assigned an unpaid, uninterrupted meal period of at least thirty (30) minutes to a maximum of one (1) hour. The meal period shall be assigned at or about the midpoint of each work shift." Regarding rest periods, Rule 10.1.7 states that "each employee shall be allowed a fifteen (15) minute rest period during any four (4) hour working period, which is not interrupted by a meal period or similar break." Of course you always need to coordinate your break times together with your supervisor, but make sure you are not forgetting this benefit of such importance to both your health and efficiency as an employee.

PERSONNEL COMMISSION ON THE WEB

For detailed and useful information on a wide array of subjects of interest to classified employees, pay a visit to the Personnel Commission link on the Torrance Unified School District website, www.tusd.org. Look under the "Departments" heading for "Personnel Commission." You will find current Personnel Commission agendas, minutes, complete job descriptions, salary schedules, and FAQs (frequently asked questions), as well as links to the District classified application form and a complete set of the most recently revised Personnel Commission Rules and Regulations. Under the heading "Current Job Postings" on the website home page, you can also view the details and deadlines for all current classified job announcements.

EMPLOYMENT INTEREST CARDS

If potential applicants or current employees would like to be notified whenever a position in which they may have an interest is opened for recruitment, all they need to do is to complete an Employment Interest Card and drop it off at the Personnel Commission office. This card will be kept on file for six months. If the particular position of interest becomes open for recruitment during that period, the applicable cards will be mailed out to all interested individuals so they can then complete and submit a District application form for consideration.
