November 18, 2003

CALL TO ORDER

The meeting was called to order by Dr. Klonecky at 5:30 p.m.

PRESENT

PLACE AND DATE OF MEETING

Torrance Unified School District Board Room, 2336 Plaza del Amo, Torrance, November 18, 2003.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mrs. Mautino.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES 11/4/03

Dr. Griffith moved, seconded by Dr. Klonecky, that the minutes of the regular meeting of November 4, 2003 be approved. Motion carried 2/0.

APPROVAL OF FIRST READING - PROPOSED REVISION TO CHAPTERS 4 AND 7, RULES AND REGULATIONS

Dr. Griffith moved, seconded by Dr. Klonecky, that the First Reading of the Proposed Revision to Chapters 4 and 7, Rules and Regulations be approved as submitted. Motion carried 2/0.

PRESENTATION OF AWARDS - MRS. GERALDINE B. McCALMAN-14 YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE PERSONNEL COMMISSION REPRESENTING THE CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES OF THE TORRANCE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

Dr. Klonecky announced that Mrs. McCalman was unable to attend the meeting but sent the attached letter to the Personnel Commission, which was read into the minutes and is attached hereto as reference.

Mr. Walt Heath, President of the California School Employees Association (CSEA), extended profound appreciation and thanks to Mrs. McCalman for all her many years of service. He said she did a fine job and noted that many times being a Commissioner is a thankless job. He presented tokens of appreciation (plant and Certificate of Appreciation) on behalf of the members of CSEA in recognition of her many years of dedicated service on behalf of the classified employees of the Torrance Unified School District while serving as a member of its Personnel Commission (certificate attached hereto as reference).

Mrs. Beverly Mautino, Retired Personnel Analyst, thanked Mrs. McCalman for everything she has done for the Commission. She noted that it was a pleasure working with Mrs. McCalman and that she would be missed by everyone.

Dr. Owen Griffith reiterated what a pleasure and honor it had been to serve with Mrs. McCalman. He related that he had learned a lot from her expertise and aspired to be a Commissioner like her.

Dr. Hal Klonecky reflected that service on the Commission had been rough in the beginning but Mrs. McCalman was the "real ramrod" of the whole experience. He added that she made sure it was what the employees wanted and always what was best for all. Dr. Klonecky described Mrs. McCalman as a "heart and soul" of the union and always looked out for them. He concluded, "She has certainly left her imprint on this Commission."

Dr. McCann also noted how much he had enjoyed working with Mrs. McCalman and hoped that she could still be part of the Commission in some way.

Dr. McCann presented a Certificate of Appreciation from the Torrance Unified School District Board of Education to Mrs. Geraldine McCalman for Dedication and Service to the District as Personnel Commissioner, 1989-2003 (attached hereto as reference).

Dr. McCann presented a Certificate of Appreciation from the California School Personnel Commissioners Association in recognition of Service and Accomplishment as a Member of the Personnel Commission. Dr. McCann added that the Executive Director of the California School Personnel Commissioners Association, Mr. Jack Hayes, said, "I am sorry to hear that Geri is leaving, she has served this state organization well with her high level of expertise." Ms. Kris Koga, Personnel Analyst, expressed appreciation to Mrs. McCalman for her many years of service to the classified employees of the Torrance Unified School District. She added that Mrs. McCalman had served as a classified employee for many years and truly understood the needs of the classified sector.

INFORMATION ITEMS

Next Regular Commission Meeting - December 2, 2003, 5:30 p.m.
Commissioners noted that as has been the previous practice, this would be the only meeting in December.

PCASC Meeting - December 3, 2003, 6:30 p.m.

COMMENTS FROM STAFF

Dr. McCann noted that the new Commissioner, Mr. Steven Busch, had been approved by the Board of Education.

Meeting was adjourned at 6:02 p.m.
