September 30, 2002

Perry Elementary School was opened in December 1905 near present-day 179th and Prairie Avenue. It was founded as an independent district with its own three-man school board. The school was named after a pioneer Redondo railroad official.

Torrance took over the school in 1947 and built new facilities. The Perry School was closed in 1981 due to declining enrollment. Robert Scharf was acting principal at the time of closure. Mr. Scharf is currently principal of Seaside Elementary School in South Torrance.

The Bell at Perry

The school served students in North Torrance as well as students from a part of North Redondo Beach. A large bell was rung to call children to school. The bell now resides in the Torrance Historical Society Museum, 1345 Post Avenue.
