Job Description - Audio-Visual Tele Equip Tech

TORRANCE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

CLASS TITLE: AUDIO-VISUAL AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of a Maintenance Supervisor, perform skilled work in the installation, repair and maintenance of District audio-visual equipment; design, install, program, test, troubleshoot, and upgrade the District PBX telephone system.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Perform skilled preventive maintenance, testing, troubleshooting and repair of audio-visual equipment including television monitors, cassette player/tape recorder, movie projectors, film strip projectors, video cassette recorders, slide projectors, overhead projectors, audio amplifiers, public address systems and speakers and other audio-visual equipment; design, install, program, test, troubleshoot, and upgrade the District PBX telephone system. E

Maintain records of work performed; prioritize work orders. E

Analyze and interpret equipment specifications; recommend specifications for the purchase of audio-visual parts and telephone system; recommend removing equipment from purchasing specification list if failure rate is high. E

Communicate with vendors ,suppliers, and dealers regarding the price, availability and ordering of parts and materials; contact outside contractors for repair services as necessary; research parts and prices and prepare requisitions; participate in installation planning, job walks, and bid analysis as a technical advisor. E

Inspect new audio-visual and telecommunication equipment for proper operation and conformance with specifications; notify warehouse personnel of substandard equipment; inscribe identification number of new audio-visual and telecommunication equipment. E

Operate a variety of electronic testing equipment and measuring instruments. E

Instruct teachers, students and operators in the correct use of audio-visual and telephone system equipment. E

Inspect, test, and assure compliance with federal, State and local codes and appropriate safety procedures for emergency telephone access. E

Operate a truck; pick up and deliver equipment to schools and District offices. E

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Solid state and tube circuit electronics.
Communications and telephone (PBX) systems.
Electrical theory and practices.
Theory of operation for television, audio and video recording devices.
Proper procedures, tools, materials and equipment used in the repair, overhaul and maintenance of a variety of audio-visual and telephone equipment.
Safety precautions observed in the maintenance and installation of electronic equipment.
Technical aspects of field of specialty.

ABILITY TO:
Perform skilled work in the repair, maintenance and adjustment of audio-visual and telephone equipment.
Design, install, program, test, and troubleshoot PBX telephone systems.
Analyze and interpret equipment specifications.
Operate electronic measuring instruments and test equipment for audio-visual and telephone systems.
Maintain records and prepare reports.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Work cooperatively with others.
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
Meet schedules and time lines.
Plan and organize work.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: two years specialized training in electronics and two years experience in the maintenance and repair of audio-visual equipment and/or telephone systems.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license. Employees in this classification must maintain insurability at the District's standard rate during the term of employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor work environment; subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of electronic testing equipment and measuring devices, hearing and speaking to exchange information, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, bending, pushing, moving, lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

HAZARDS:
Exposure to live electrical power supply.
