Job Description - Carpenter

TORRANCE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

CLASS TITLE: CARPENTER

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of a Maintenance Supervisor, perform journey-level carpentry work in the maintenance, repair, construction and alteration of District buildings and facilities.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Perform journey-level carpentry work in the maintenance, repair, construction and alteration of District buildings and facilities. E

Construct, alter, repair and inspect structures including partitions, counters, doors, roofs, sheds, window frames, shelving and stairways . E

Meet with requesting party to clarify work orders as needed. E

Build and repair school and office furniture, equipment and wooden fixtures performing mill and cabinet work necessary; fabricate new parts as necessary; construct custom moldings, cases and base; maintain and repair woodwork in District school facilities. E

Install formica tabletops and counters; install floor tile and paneling; install drop ceiling according to building code. E

Repair or replace door closers. E

Draws detailed sketch to calculate exact dimensions and materials needed to complete job. E Install wheel chair ramps according to code; install handicap railings. E

Operate a variety of carpentry equipment such as lathes, saws, shapers, joiners, sanders, power and hand tools and a power-activated tool for driving pins into concrete and steel. E

Obtain materials and supplies needed to complete assignment. E

Assure compliance with building, health and safety codes and standards. E

Sharpen and maintain hand and machine tools; maintain and service assigned equipment. E

Maintain records of work performed including labor and materials used; receive work orders and determine priorities; estimate materials needed; request materials needed according to established guidelines. E

Work from plans, oral instructions, sketches and blueprints. E

Drive a District vehicle to work sites; check oil, fuel and water levels and tires. E

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Proper methods of constructing and repairing wooden articles.
Trade tools, equipment, materials, methods and techniques used in skilled carpentry and in general maintenance and repair.
Appropriate health and safety precautions and procedures.
Technical aspects of field of specialty.
Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Requirements of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
Uniform Building Code requirements pertaining to carpentry work.
Health and safety regulations and procedures.

ABILITY TO:
Perform a wide variety of skilled journey-level carpentry in the maintenance and repair of District facilities and equipment.
Read and interpret shop drawings, sketches, plans and specifications.
Prioritize, schedule, assign and review work.
Interpret, explain and apply codes, rules and regulations involved in assigned maintenance activities.
Effectively and safely operate a variety of tools and equipment used in the skilled carpentry trade. Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Estimate labor and material cost for specific projects.
Make arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately.
Work independently with little direction.
Meet schedules and time lines.
Maintain routine records.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
Operate a District vehicle.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: two years journey-level carpentry experience.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license; qualify for a pneumatic-actuated tool license within the first year in this class. Employees in this classification must maintain insurability at the District's standard rate during the term of employment. Asbestos Containing Building Materials (ACBM) training.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor, outdoor and shop environment; subject to driving to conduct work and subject to noise from equipment operation.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Bending, pushing, moving, lifting objects, weighing up to 75 pounds, heavy physical labor, standing and walking for extended periods of time, climbing, bending at the waist, crawling, kneeling, reaching, pulling, pushing, carrying, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized tools and equipment, seeing to observe needed repair and to make repairs, and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.

HAZARDS:
Working on ladders or scaffolding at heights, working in a cramped or restrictive work chamber, working around and with machinery having moving parts, and exposure to flying debris or nails.
