Job Description - Computer Repair Technician

TORRANCE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

CLASS TITLE: COMPUTER REPAIR TECHNICIAN

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of a Maintenance Supervisor, perform skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of District microcomputer equipment, networks and peripherals to enhance the quality of established curriculum and prevent service interruption of equipment.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Schedule work to be completed by contacting Principals, department heads, teachers and others so educational priorities and processes will be minimally interrupted. E

Maintain, adjust, upgrade, service and repair microcomputers, networks, terminals and peripherals; facsimile machine; clean and adjust disk drives; lubricate mechanical drive components; replace cords, broken keys on keyboards, ram chips and disk drive controller cards and other parts. E

Install cables necessary for computer operating systems, networks and microcomputers throughout the District; set up, configure and maintain local area networks; configure computer labs; format hard drives and troubleshoot applications software. E

Utilize a variety of electronic test equipment and diagnostic software to determine defects and malfunctions; replace defective components and wiring using a variety of hand tools and equipment. E

Maintain, adjust, service and repair monitors, digital cameras and other audio-visual equipment for use with computers. E

Schedule and perform preventive maintenance on computers and ancillary equipment. E

Consult with vendors regarding timely and cost-efficient completion of District projects. E

Coordinate efforts of outside vendors and District personnel to reach desired standardization of equipment constituting more effective routines. E

Research product prices and availability; requisition and maintain an adequate supply of parts and repair materials; maintain records of work performed and repair history of individual pieces of equipment. E

Prioritize emergency calls determining safety hazards and methods and procedures for their correction. E

Drive a District vehicle to and from work sites; operate a variety of equipment, meters and hand tools used in the diagnosis and repair of computer equipment. E

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Tools, equipment, practices and methods of installing, cleaning, adjusting and repairing microcomputers, terminals, peripherals and related equipment.
Basic electronic concepts and principles of electronic data processing, digital electronic logic,computer time-sharing operations and data transmissions.
Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Technical aspects of field of specialty.

ABILITY TO:
Install, replace, maintain and repair various types of computer systems, peripherals and related equipment effectively and efficiently.
Configure labs and LANS.
Utilize electronic testing equipment to determine defects and malfunctions.
Work from plans, technical manuals, schematics, diagrams and specifications.
Schedule maintenance and repair work, setting and meeting time lines.
Maintain records.
Understand and carry out oral and written direction.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: two years electronics technology course work with an emphasis in computer technology and two years experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of microcomputers, terminals, peripherals and related equipment.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license. Employees in this classification must maintain insurability at the District's standard rate during the term of employment.

ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor work environment; subject to driving to conduct work.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Bending, pushing, moving, lifting moderately heavy objects , dexterity of hands and fingers to operate tools and diagnostic equipment, bending, kneeling, and seeing to assemble computer equipment.
