What are some practical tips for taking a written test?

| 1. | FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS: The proctor who is in charge of the testing will read the instructions. Listen carefully. If you do not understand something, ask questions. |
| 2. | BUDGET YOUR TIME: Before you begin the test, look it over and decide how much time you can spend on each question. Answer easy questions first. Leave the hard ones and come back to them later if you have time. |
| 3. | READ THE QUESTIONS COMPLETELY: Read the entire question. Do not think you understand a question after reading only the first few words. On multiple choice questions, read all possible answers and pick the best answer. You cannot pick the best answer until you have read all the answer choices. |
| 4. | LOOK FOR KEY WORDS: Make sure you read every word in each question. There are often key words which may help you to find the correct answer. Some common key words include: all, always, best, except, first, generally, greatest, last, least, more, most, never, none, not, only, small, some, usually, and worst. |
| 5. | ELIMINATE WRONG CHOICES: In multiple choice questions, eliminate the choices you know are wrong. When you narrow down the number of choices, you increase your chances of answering the question correctly even when you must guess. |
| 6. | MARK YOUR ANSWER PROPERLY: When you take a test, mark your answer on an answer sheet--not in the test booklet. When you are taking a test, check your answer sheet from time to time to be sure you are using the proper line or space in which to mark your answer. |
| 7. | DO YOUR OWN WORK: Test-takers who are caught copying are disqualified. Besides, your neighbor may not know as much as you do. |
| 8. | CHECK YOUR WORK: After you have answered all the questions in the test, check your work. |
