CLASS TITLE: FABRICATING WELDER
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned Maintenance Supervisor, perform skilled metal work including sheet metal, fabrication, maintenance, security and repair welding; analyze and prioritize work projects, determine material needs and weld a wide variety of metal types.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Design, fabricate, alter or repair metal parts and surfaces including doors, shelves, carts, railings, locks, fencing, hinges, cages, vents, bleachers and playground and sports equipment. E
Drive to District sites to repair duct work, fabricate parts on school shop equipment, install metal parts and sheet metal, repair metal equipment and parts and perform a variety of welding assignments. E
Assist in securing District facilities and equipment; weld security bars, screens, grates, light covers, tool boxes and cabinets; mount and secure safes, lockers and a variety of District equipment. E
Fabricate, weld and mount a variety of locking devices for doors, gates and boxes; weld security railing pipes; alter, repair or construct sheet metal gutters, down spouts, flashing and duct work. E
Perform a variety of welding for automotive repair including hitches, racks, seats, tailgates and automotive shops lifts; weld parts on a variety of vehicles and equipment including tractors, mowers, trucks, buses, fork lifts, trailers and grounds maintenance equipment. E
Repair and weld structural metal, metal decking and light-gauge framing; repair metal and aluminum stairs, doors, floor gratings and skylights. E
Forge, dress, temper and sharpen tools; operate and perform routine maintenance on power and shop tools. E
Perform safety checks and repair unsafe conditions including worn playground equipment, broken or protruding pipes, classroom and athletic equipment. E
Weld and cut parts using MIG, arc, tungsten gas and acetylene welders; perform welding and soldering on a variety of metals including lead, steel, galvanized metals, copper and cast iron. E
Analyze and schedule repair projects according to priority; determine and requisition metals and materials needed for fabricating and welding; research products, cost and sources of supply for best quality for price; store and maintain materials and equipment in a safe and orderly condition. E
Operate a variety of tools and equipment including welders, grinders, lathes, mills, drill press, saws, power shears, sheet metal brakes and equipment and a variety of hand and power tools used in the welding trade. E
Prepare and maintain records associated with work completed including time, materials used and costs; maintain inventory records of hardware, materials, parts and equipment. E
Perform related duties as assigned.

Operate a variety of tools and equipment used in journey-level welding, fabrication and sheet metal work.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: two (2) years of journey-level welding experience; training in MIG, TIG, and OXY acetylene metal fabrication.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license. Employees in this classification must maintain insurability at the District's standard rate during the term of employment. Possession of State of California/L.A. County Structural Welding Certificate. Asbestos Containing Building Materials (ACBM) training.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Shop environment; subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Bending, pushing, moving, and lifting objects weighing up to 75 pounds, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized tools and equipment, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, standing for extended periods of time, and bending at the waist.
HAZARDS:
Exposure to welding sparks, chemicals, fumes, and burns.
