CLASS TITLE: MAINTENANCE MECHANIC
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of a Maintenance Supervisor, perform skilled maintenance work in the general maintenance, repair and construction of District facilities and equipment.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Perform skilled maintenance, repair and construction work in the basic trades such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, metal fabrication, asphalt paving and concrete work. E
Assist plumbers with the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing systems including restroom facility fixtures, sinks and drinking fountains; pack faucets as needed. E
Assist plumbers in locating breaks and in performing repairs; install new piping; repair or replace pipes, valves, fittings, ball cocks and other fixtures; cut and thread pipes. E
Draw sketches or plans for assigned projects; assist with the development of specifications; update "as-built" drawings as assigned. E
Prepare and set forms for pouring cement; prepare site and install rebar steel; estimate materials and amount of concrete needed; pour and finish cement. E
Prepare, pour and finish asphalt for new pavement installations; repair playground and driveway pavement as needed. E
Assist in the planning and installation of new irrigation systems as required; assist with trenching as needed; replace and reroute new lines; calculate and install appropriate number of sprinkler heads on each line. E
Install new chain link fences; prepare holes and pour cement as needed for the installation of posts; repair and weld chain link and other fences as needed. E
Construct, frame, install, maintain and repair roofs, partitions, ceilings, walls, doors, windows and related structures; locate roof leaks, remove old roofing and install new roofs and roofing material. E
Prepare, mix and apply plaster to repair damaged walls. E
Maintain records related to work orders; work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches. E
Operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment utilized in assigned skilled maintenance activities; operate heavy equipment including back hoe, skip loader, trencher, fork lift, boom truck, jack hammer and cement saw. E
Move District equipment and furniture to new locations as needed.
Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Trades used in building and grounds maintenance, alterations and repairs.
Methods, tools, equipment and materials used in skilled maintenance trades.
Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Requirements of maintaining building and grounds facilities in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
ABILITY TO:
Perform a variety of skilled maintenance work in the general maintenance, repair and construction of District facilities and grounds.
Operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment utilized in assigned skilled maintenance activities.
Work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches.
Maintain routine records.
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
Meet schedules and time lines.
Estimate labor and material requirements and costs.
Work independently with little direction.
Make arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: four years increasingly responsible experience in a variety of the building and grounds maintenance trades.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license. Employees in this classification must maintain insurability at the District's standard rate during the term of employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor, outdoor and shop environment; subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Lifting, bending, pushing, and moving heavy objects, standing and walking for extended periods of time, bending at the waist, crawling, kneeling, reaching, pulling, pushing, climbing ladders and working at heights, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate power tools and equipment, and seeing to observe and perform repairs.
HAZARDS:
Exposure to working at heights on ladders or scaffolding, fumes and vapors, working in a cramped or restrictive work chamber, and working around and with machinery having moving parts.
