Terry Ragins was elected to the Board in November 2003. She graduated from Ohio State University in 1978, with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy. She subsequently received a Master’s of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy from Washington University in 1985. She has lived in Torrance since 1987.
Terry has a firm commitment to education, and has been privileged to devote herself to the education of children. She has served thousands of hours as a volunteer in the educational system. At the school level Terry served on 3 different School Site Councils. Her additional contributions include work in 3 PTA unitss including Yukon Elementary School (Library Director for 5 years, Accelerated Reader literacy/math tutor as well as various Vice President positions and Recording Secretary), Magruder Middle School (Adventures in Art Docent and Coordinator, Magruder Mentors Coordinator, Babysitter Training Program Coordinator, as well as PTA President and various Vice President positions), and North High School (Newsletter, and Vice President). She has helped to coach and assist her children’s teams in Destination Imagination and Odyssey of the Mind competitions, in which they represented Torrance in the OM World Finals. She also participated in a successful distinguished school application and Coordinated Compliance Review as well as the implementation of award winning PTA programs related to literacy and Red Ribbon Week anti-substance use activities. Terry has been actively involved in AYSO soccer as Team Mom and on many occasions while assisting her husband as coach. In recognition of her ongoing volunteer efforts for the schools, Terry was honored to be selected as recipient of PTA’s Honorary Service and Continuing Service Awards.
In addition to serving at the individual school sites, she has been on the district-wide Board of Directors of the Torrance Council of PTAs as Corresponding Secretary, Parliamentarian and School Board Liaison. She has been a parent member of many different TUSD Math, Science, and Health steering committees and Textbook Selection committees plus the GATE Advisory Committee, District Communication Council, and the Drug Alcohol and Tobacco Education Advisory Committee. Terry has volunteered with the Torrance Education Foundation as part of their Board of Directors. She has been a part of the Community Advisory Panel at Exxon Mobil as well as a member of the Pegasus Award Selection Committee.
Terry and her physician husband Mark, have two sons who attend North High School. Travel has always been a priority of the family, and in 2001 they were awarded the annual “Spirit of Adventure Award” by the American Youth Hostel organization.
Mrs. Ragins is devoted to providing the best quality education possible for her own, and all Torrance students. She wholeheartedly believes that our students are our future.
